Shacklocks’ Living Together Agreement

At a time when you are considering sharing your home with someone, the last thing on your mind is likely to be the possible future breakdown of the relationship. We will often commit to living with someone without thinking through all of the legal and financial implications beforehand. Unfortunately, it is often the case that disputes arise and the existence of a professionally drafted legal agreement in those circumstances could be invaluable.

By entering into a Shacklocks’ Living Together Agreement, people living together can record their wishes in the hope of avoiding what can be a lengthy, unpleasant and costly legal dispute over assets.

If an agreement is drawn up, upon which both parties have had independent legal advice, fully disclosed to each other their assets and intend for it to be binding, then English Courts are more likely to uphold the wishes recorded in the agreement.

A Living Together Agreement can be of particular significance and value where the parties are introducing unequal proportions of wealth into the relationship.

At Shacklocks we believe that any Living Together Agreement entered into must be fair and carefully drafted in order to meet legal requirements. However, by putting those arrangements in place, you may be limiting the potential for a dispute and you will at least be introducing some element of certainty into your living arrangements.
